Special was established in July of 2007 to bridge the gap of support to parents and guardians between what local councils offer and what families need to do at home.
We set up with the vision of supporting the home programs that the majority of families and guardians follow, such as ‘Sunrise,’ ‘More than Words’ and ‘ABA.’ These programs are the autistic equivalent of home schooling and can be combined with specialist council run schooling or operate exclusively on their own.
The costs of setting these up can be enormous. From room conversions, literature and training materials, specialist equipment, training courses & lectures and employment of assistants. Special want to help as much as possible by supplying these resources as well as providing free training courses by experts in their field, relating to each families individual program.
By employing trained assistants, families can increase the success of these programs by spreading the work through a unique and specially selected small number of people to ensure maximum enthusiasm and, above all, enjoyment by the child and all involved.
Special's Principles
- Work with our families and guardians on their chosen program to ensure all programs and aid are family led with support and guidance from the charity.
- All families, guardians and others to be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality.
- Create partnerships with local groups, councils, professionals and other charities to ensure positive resource, information sharing and good practise.
- Equal Opportunities.
- Dependability and accountability.
- Create awareness and understanding of ASC.
